Orlando North

Food, fun and entertainment in Seminole County

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

Just minutes north of Orlando Florida attractions, Seminole County is experiencing a cultural and entrepreneurial resurgence. Called Orlando North by those in the know, it offers “an easier, wilder way to do Orlando” with “pristine nature parks, less crowded restaurants and more affordable hotels.” We spent several days touring Seminole County meeting business owners.

Here is a list of Seminole County Tourism’s favorite food, fun and entertainment and our notes on Orlando North.

The ABC’s Of Food, Fun and Entertainment

Afternoon Tea: Dickens Coffee and Tea Room, 3801 W. Lake Mary Blvd., Lake Mary

Bright Star-gazing at the Emil Buehler Planetarium at Seminole State College, 100 Weldon Blvd., Sanford

Candy, like homemade marshmallows: Wondermade, 214 E. First St., Sanford

or

Authentic German Cuisine: Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Cafe, 205 E. First St., Sanford

Beers from local Craft Breweries, including The Hourglass Brewery, Celery City Craft, Red Cypress Brewery, Bowigens Beer Company Co., Sanford Brewing Company,  and Wops Hops among many others

Canoeing on the Wekiwa River, plus kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing at Wekiva Island, 1014 Miami Springs Dr., Longwood

or

Awesome giraffe feedings: Central Florida Zoo, 3755 NW Hwy 18-92, Sanford

Baseball Tournaments at the Seminole County Sports Complex, 3450 E. Lake Mary Blvd., Sanford

Craines Roost Park events. From walkathons to concerts on the floating stage, sunset cinema and July 4th Fireworks, there are great events awaiting. 274 Cranes Roost Blvd., Altamonte Springs

or

Airboat rides with Black Hammock Adventures, on Lake Jesup, 2356 Black Hammock Fish Camp Rd., Oviedo

Botanical Gardens at the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens, 3755 NW Hwy 18-92, Sanford

Cross-Seminole Trail hiking, part of the Florida National Scenic Trail, in Lake Mary.

Orlando North Bike Trails

The Florida National Scenic Trail is “a federally designated, non-motorized, recreation trail that spans approximately 1,300 miles across some of the state’s most beautiful and unique landscapes.”

The trails provide access to picnic tables, water fountains, sports fields, and restrooms.

Bicyclists, runners and hikers can download maps for Seminole County’s popular trails such as:

The 14-mile Flagler Trail, which runs across several of Seminole County’s most scenic wilderness areas of Chuluota and Geneva, and is great for bird watching;

The 23-mile Cross Seminole Trail, ideal for hiking, cycling and horseback riding, takes you through Oviedo, Winter Springs, Longwood, Lake Mary and Sanford;

The 14-mile Seminole-Wekiva Trail, which includes Altamonte Springs, Longwood, Lake Mary and Sanford, is a rail trail that runs alongside the tracks of Florida’s old Orange Beltway Railway, at one time the longest railroad in the country.

So check your tire pressure, put on your helmet, and pedal your way through Orlando North, Seminole County.

Our Orlando North Experiences

We spent several days touring Seminole County meeting business owners. In addition to all the quality entertainment and outside recreation options, this community is filled with delicious food and breweries.

Vinzo’s Italian Grill

We visited Vinzo's Italian Grill and Pizzeria in Casselberry, Florida and enjoyed one of the best Italian meals we have had anywhere. We asked owner Vinny Essa about his restaurant.

“Our philosophy is simple: Use exceptional quality ingredients combine it with traditional culinary skills (old time cooking techniques) and you will produce an amazing product. We have a mixture of our unique creations plus our intake on traditional Italian entrees. We believe listening to customers and following trends help create most of our hit dishes,” Essa told us.

Vinzo's Italian Grill and Pizzeria is located at 1006 State Road 436, Casselberry, Florida. You can phone them at 407-331-9090. For more information, visit
http://www.vinzos.com/

The Townhouse Restaurant

The Townhouse is truly an Ovideo tradition. They have been serving up good food and good  times since the 1950's with a family owned and operated philosophy of "great food at fair prices." they like to say that they are where Oviedo meets to eat!!

We spoke with owner Leigh-Ann Tepper as we enjoyed a delicious breakfast with
District 2 Commissioner John Horan.

"We have a lot of loyal customers. Most eat here at least once a week. Some are here three times a week."

The Townhouse is located at 139 N Central Avenue, Oviedo, Florida.

For more information, visit http://www.oviedotownhouse.com  or phone 407-365-5151.

The Tennessee Truffle

The Tennessee Truffle serves delicious southern breakfast and lunch. The décor is a delight with a kitchen that resembles a tin roof building. The dining area has red brick walls, booths, tables, bar stools and even a church pew.

Owner / chef  Nat Russell said, “In the Appalachian Mountains, the Tennessee Truffle is the first thing to grow in the Spring.”

His Chocolate Gravy Biscuit is incredible!

The Tennessee Truffle is located at 125 W. 1st St. Sanford, Florida. Phone them at 407-942-3977. For more information, visit

Lonnie's Fusion Cuisine

Lonnie's Fusion Cuisine opened in October of 2012. Owned and operated by Chef Lonnie and his wife Christina.

Chef Lonnie loves mixing flavors from other cultures and fusing them with American Cuisine. All Lonnie's all meals are prepared to order to provide you with the best meal possible.

"I'm here to knock your socks off," Chef Lonnie told us. "Our specialty is seafood and my wife creates desserts. I like French and Caribbean and Asian influences on fresh seafood."

Lonnie's Fusion Cuisine is located at 124 N 4th St Ste 1700, Lake Mary, Florida.

The Smiling Bison

The Smiling Bison never intended to offer bison on the menu! It was named after owner Josh Oakley’s hometown of Buffalo, New York.

Even though serving bison wasn’t the original plan, they do serve an outstanding 1/3 pound bison burger.

The Smiling Bison vision “includes a primary focus on handcrafting creative, high quality, delicious tasting foods while utilizing the local food supply chain whenever possible. Additionally, within the restaurant, we take great pride in creating and sustaining an environment that completely compliments the food.”

Chef / Owner Josh Oakley told us, “We try to get everything fresh. We get some ingredients from Titusville,.“

The Smiling Bison is located at 107 S Magnolia Ave, Sanford, Florida. Phone 407-915-6086. For more information, visit
http://smilingbison.com/sanford/

The Crepevine

Crepevine  founder Serge Osaulenko developed a love for crepes during a six week visit to Greece. We are glad he did. His Munchy Crunchy (banana, yogurt, almonds, granola, dried cranberry, honey) and Sweet Tooth (banana, fresh strawberries, nutella, peanut butter) are fantastic.

The Crepevine is located at 249 West State Road 436, Altamonte Springs, Florida. Phone 321-972-8999. For more information, visit
www.thecrepevine.com

Hollerbach’s

We joined Theo Hollerbach for lunch at his popular Hollerbach's and we enjoyed a variety of German foods. “It’s comfort food to me. It’s just good home cooking,” he said.

Theo is a lot of fun! Here’s a little bit of what he told us.

“We like to say Hollerbach's – Where Gemütlichkeit Happens. It means happiness, peace through meals.”

“We’re going to be trying the Kissing Beer. If you have a good beer, you have a better chance at getting a kiss!”

“We have a really good oompah band and people spend two to three hours enjoying themselves. Some of our guests start a conga line and dance around the restaurant.”

Hollerbach's is located at 205 E 1st Street, Sanford, Florida. For more information, visit
https://hollerbachs.com/

Hourglass Brewing

Hourglass Brewing is all about quality. They never use any of malt, hop or flavor extracts. They use only natural ingredients “from locally grown tropical fruits to Indian and South American herbs, hops from Africa and Japan, or malt from Chile and Scotland.”

Their 240 seat taproom is decorated with “nostalgic remembrances, geek culture, and the work of local artists.” Table top and console games are offered for free play and they host live music and comedy nights.

Matt Gemmell told us, “We try to make it about beer first. You try flavors but at the end of the day, it’s still beer and that’s important for us. Brewing is both an art and a science. It is a blend of the two. There is a lot of guesswork and experimentation. Sometimes we want people to come in and say what the hell is that?”

Hourglass Brewing is located at 480 S. Ronald Reagan Blvd, Longwood, Florida. Phone 407- 262-0056. For more information, visit
http://thehourglassbrewery.com/

Wop’s Hops Brewery

Wop’s Hops Brewing Company is Sanford’s first microbrewery.  It is located in historic downtown Sanford in the landmark Stokes Fish Market building.

Wop’s Hops Brewing Company offers fine craft ales, a selection of wines, sodas and dog-friendly beer garden.

“It’s fun to be part of the craft beer scene in Florida. I approach brewing beer the way a chef approaches a fine meal. It has a lot of art to it,” co-owner Greg Piecora told us.

Wop’s Hops Brewing Company  is located at 419 S Sanford Ave, Sanford, Florida. Phone 407-878-7819. For more information, visit
www.wopshopsbrewing.com

Bowigens Beer Company

Bowigens  is a mixture of the owner’s (Kevin Wigen and Bobby Bowen) last names.

Bowigens Beer Company began when musicians and long-time friends Kevin Wigen and Bobby Bowen turned their love for brewing beer into a business.

Wigen and Bowen rely on a strong balance between art and science and pride themselves on being artistic brewers.

“Most of the time, you are drinking beer that is 24 hours old. Every beer goes into a specific glass that accentuates the flavor. We feel like we’re helping educate people about beer,” Bowen told us.

Bowigens Beer Company is located at 1014 State Road 436, Casselberry, Florida. Phone 407-960-7816. 407-878-7819. For more information, visit

Limo Cycle Tours

Tour Sanford, Florida on a pedal powered bar! Even though drinking and driving is thankfully illegal, drinking and pedaling is not…when you are on a Limo Cycle Tour in Sanford, Florida. We enjoyed a Limo Cycle Tour and spoke with Managing Partner Steve Tishman.

“Limo Cycle is an eco-friendly, pedal-powered, team building, pub crawling, birthday celebrating, bachelorette partying, memory making good time!” Tishman said.

Limo Cycle Tours is located at 303 W 3rd St, #4, Sanford, Florida. For more information, visit www.limocycle.com

Sign The Petition For A Clothing-Optional Beach For Tampa Bay

Tampa Area Naturists (TAN), in alliance with the B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation, is seeking the (re-)establishment of an officially-designated, European-style, family-oriented, Clothing-Optional (naturist) section of beach in the Tampa Bay area due to the complete absence of a designated naturist beach on the entire West Coast of Florida, to satisfy local demand and to enhance the attraction of the Tampa Bay area as an international tourist destination, with considerable benefit to the local economy and the hospitality industry.

Sign The Petition For New York City Park Clothes Free Recreation Area

As New York City has shown itself to be at the forefront of social change, and anecdotal evidence has shown that both toplessness and exposure in appropriate public settings does not harm, nor represent a nuisance to society, we hereby petition the great city of New York to set aside an area of public park land within the city limits for clothing-optional recreation consistent with the Rules and Regulations of the New York City Department of Parks and Regulations excluding Section 1-04(n).

Gay Naturists International - An organization that cares about who you are, not what you do

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

Nudist, naturist and skinnydip vacations are some of the fastest growing markets for travelers today. Nudist and naturist venues offer a welcoming attitude of body acceptance for people of every shape and size. Gay men have an excellent opportunity to enjoy nudist, naturist and skinnydip social events through Gay Naturists International.

We asked GNI Board Member Nick Roessler, to tell us more.

How can you describe GNI in one sentence?

An organization that cares about who you are, not what you do; GNI allows men to bond with other men as nature intended, stripping away both clothing and the pretense of status, privilege or power.

What can you tell us about GNI events for 2017?

Right now we are planning our signature annual event, The Gathering. It's a naked camp excursion that is from August 18-27, 2017.

An attendee can go the whole time or attend a shorter attendance option. At camp, you don’t have to worry about most of your needs. You can go to activities such as nude yoga, aerobics, and leather / kink workshops, to name a few or simply relax by the pool during the day.

You can hike, go boating, play tennis, or just go and “play” all in the nude.

In the evening we have a themed (costumed) social hour with snacks and beverages, a nightly show, a piano bar, karaoke, naked bingo and other various events.

Later in the evening, most people go to our dance / night club to end the day. Or some choose to extend their night around the campfire with other like-minded guys.

Of course, different cabins will host parties during the day and night; there are tons of social and physical activities for all to keep one busy.

The GNI Gathering has all-inclusive prices. Once you pay, you get three meals a day, non-alcoholic beverages, beer, wine, and a select serving of cocktails at the evening social hours.

Most people stay in one of 72 cabins with real beds, electricity, shower and bathroom facilities, but some will bring a tent, stay in an RV, or stay at a hotel nearby and commute to camp each day.

Once you arrive, we feed you three meals a day, offer evening snacks, all-you-can-drink beverages, housing and all amenities without ever having to pull out your wallet unless you want to purchase items at our Crafts Fair or bid on items during our annual silent auction we hold for Naturist Action Committee (NAC).

What can you tell us about GNI clubs?

GNI has the most comprehensive worldwide listing of nude clubs for men and naked yoga group listings in our online Nude Clubs Directory. We strive to keep this information as accurate as possible, searching the internet for new listings and removing information of clubs that may have disbanded.

We have two categories of club listings – affiliated and non-affiliated. Affiliation with GNI simply means that an individual club agrees to GNI’s statement on sexuality: “Our goal is to promote healthy, legal, non-sexual nude recreation. While GNI knows sex is natural, sex is not equated with naturism. We respect our members for their individuality (whether they choose to express their sexuality), seek to respect individual sensibilities as may be appropriate, and encourage our members to do the same. We also encourage sexually active individuals to practice safer sex.”

Affiliated clubs also agree to co-promote our organizations and receive additional benefits for affiliating such as complimentary hosting of their website on the GNI server, $5 rebate for every referral from a club for each member who joins GNI, monthly communications from GNI with special invitations and discount offers, enhanced listings in our online Nude Club Directory, calendar / event listings in GNI’s semi-monthly publication, GNI BuffBuzz, among other benefits.

Non-affiliated clubs have a complimentary basic listing in our Nude Club Directory but none of the other benefits. Additionally, every club is self-governed and organizes itself independently. While most of the clubs plan non-sexual activities, hosts may, at their discretion, offer their members an area exclusively set aside for sexual activity after the official event ends.

GNI understands that every club organizes for their own recreational purposes and respects the identities of the clubs that come together for more than just pure social nude recreational activities.

Who attends GNI events and clubs? Is it a good fit for everyone regardless of age and body shape?

We see guys of all different ages and shapes come to The Gathering: In a nudist environment, despite physical differences (of all kinds, wink wink), shedding one’s clothing frees one from the trappings and hierarchy of conventional society and engenders an openness and acceptance that is unique.

We get guys from all walks of life, age, socio-economic levels and different cultures from around the world. We do often get the question of “good fit” or “acceptance.” And many tell us it took them a long time to get up the courage to attend or that they were concerned about attending alone as a first-timer.

We can honestly say that time and time again, new attendees tell us that within their first day at The Gathering they are overwhelmed by the support, welcoming and judgment-free friendship they receive at the event.

What can you tell us about the history of GNI?

GNI began in 1981 as a “Special Interest Group” of The Naturist Society (TNS).

In 1993, we became an independent organization. Through our affiliated clubs, we lend a bare hand to any fellow who’s comfortable being gay and naked.

We also help the Naturist Action Committee (NAC) promote social nudism, and in maintaining and expanding clothing-optional recreation zones.

GNI is open to all gay, bisexual, and gay-friendly men who are at least 21 years old.

In 1985, the first Gathering was held at a small naturist campground in Ohio. This was a simple, unstructured and informal event. Each year thereafter, the event grew in scope and popularity.

The Gathering moved to its current location at a beautiful campground in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania in 1992. The Gathering has attracted upwards of 800 guests every August.

In 1993, GNI incorporated as a standalone, not-for-profit organization. With the exception of our Executive Director, we are an all-volunteer organization.

In the early 2000s, GNI began to produce nude cruises, nude mini-vacation and tropical resort experiences for men. We are currently working on an exciting international excursion to Australia that we hope to offer in early 2018.

GNI also publishes a semi-monthly blog, GNI BuffBuzz, that reports on GNI events and activities, events and activities of GNI affiliated clubs and organizations, as well as general topics of naturism, gay and straight.

GNI’s Gathering has been changing the lives of men for decades; we hope to have an opportunity to show you the empowering feeling of nude social recreation amongst our family of brothers. Come, join us!

Conclusion

Gay men have an excellent opportunity to enjoy nudist, naturist and skinnydip social events through Gay Naturists International.

The Bar S Ranch – North Carolina’s 300 Acre Clothing Free Resort

The Bar S Ranch – North Carolina’s 300 Acre Clothing Free Resort

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

What happens when you turn a North Carolina cattle ranch into a nudist haven? You get The Bar S Ranch - a thriving, 300 acre nudist resort with a seven acre lake stocked filled with bass and bream and miles of trails used for hikers, bikers, and golf carts.

We asked Bar S Ranch Co-owner / Manager Lynn M. to tell us more.

How would you describe your property in one sentence?

The Bar S Ranch offers over 300 acres of natural beauty, including miles of trails, a large lake, a swimming pool, two club houses and a sauna for guests and members to enjoy.

What is special about your nudist / naturist property and your guests?

Most guests are impressed by the vast amount of land at the Bar S Ranch. After following the winding road to the clubhouse/pool area, visitors often comment on the friendly atmosphere at the Ranch.

Everyone is given a brief tour of the facilities in the immediate area and introduced to others lounging by the pool. One of our primary goals is to make everyone feel welcome so that they will want to return.

Under new management and ownership,The Ranch is one of the few, if not only, nudist resorts that is owned solely by women. Having inherited the Bar S Ranch from the former owners, Lynn and Deb have made it their goal to renovate and remodel in order to insure the longevity of the Ranch. The Bar S has operated for 28 consecutive years with Lynn and Deb having total control for the last two years.

Membership has increased, cabins have sold, and visitor numbers hit record highs last season.

What accommodations are available at Bar S Ranch?

We have several rental units available at the Ranch, including a tree house cabin, two motel type rooms, and cabins located in an area called The Meadow, where the cabins owned by members are located.

Although the cabins are "dry", the bath house is located close to the rentals in The Meadow, and the bath facilities are close to the rooms and the Tree House.

We have an area called The Woods for RV camping and can accommodate RV's of any size.  We have water and electric hook ups and a dump station for RV campers to use.

Tent camping is available and most choose to camp by the lake because it is in close proximity to the clubhouse area.

What activities and special events are available at Bar S Ranch?

We have an activities director who coordinates events.

Members may host an event and have it placed on the calendar.

On holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4th, and  Labor Day, we have  a DJ or band that play by the pool.

We celebrate National Nude Weekend with an open house and participation in the  AANR Skinny Dip competition.

We have themed potlucks, birthday parties, Christmas in July and activities designed to engage people by the pool. Water volleyball is played as well as Giant Jenga and Corn Hole.

Golf cart rides on the miles and miles of trails are a favorite pastime. In the large clubhouse we have a pool table and a ping pong table.

In the small clubhouse, which is air conditioned, we have a big screen TV and WIFI connection.

During the off season after Labor Day, members still have access to the facilities.

We have Halloween parties, a Thanksgiving Feast, a New Year's Eve party.

Members often gather on weekends to play card or board games, eat or just watch TV.

Why is nudism / naturism an important and healthy choice?

The nudist lifestyle offers people the ability to relax in a natural environment sans clothes. Once the clothes come off, people realize that there is no judgment.

Although the primary attraction to a nudist resort has always been sunbathing, as society became more aware of the harmful effects of the sun, we had to find other activities to attract potential members.

We have lovely shaded areas, two gazebos in the pool area and umbrellas that can give sun worshipers a respite from the sun.

The camaraderie felt at the Ranch promotes a friendly atmosphere that relieves stress.

As we continue to grow, we hope to encourage others to participate in the nudist lifestyle.
